Hello all! time for another short and to the point review. I’ve been running this ammo for a few months now basically because its cheap and available at the local Walmart. I pay $23 and some change out the door for a 500 round brick of it. I’ve been using this for steel challenge as i don’t need a very accurate round and cheap is, well always good. I don’t need an accurate round for steel challenge but in my Marlin 795 this groups at .5 inches at 25 yards and .75 inches at 50 yards of a bench and bags. Can't beat that for bulk ammo.
Out of about 4000 rounds I’ve had 3 rounds that failed to fire. That’s it, no other issues, but more on that in a moment. Now I’ve shot CCI Mini-Mags, Remington Golden Bullets, and Federal Champion over the years and have had way more failures with those. Again can’t complain about that. Now those 3 rounds did fire when i ran them thru a second time, and they very well could have been because of the next issue.
The ugly- this ammo is DIRTY, i repeat DIRTY!!! I can run 2000 rounds of any of those other 3 rounds I listed and still be cleaner than 200 rounds of Thunderbolt. Now that said, it has caused issues for me in steel challenge. It’s so dirty that if I shoot all 8 stages I need to take aerosol gun oil and blow the extractors on my 795 out because of the buildup this ammo causes will make the extractor not grab the rim hard enough. Now remember about those three failure to fires, they may have been due to a sticking fire pin or maybe not, I’m not sure.
Overall dirty, cheap, accurate ammo. suppose you cant really expect all good, but if you can live with having to clean your rifle fairly often, or you shoot a bolt action this is some very good cheap ammo to feed your range therapy. I for one will continue to shoot it for Steel Challenge due to price, just remembering to give a quick hose down at around the 4th stage.
