Aero Precision AR-15 upper receiver

Updated: Sep 11, 2018

Going back to my last review(the Bear Creek 300 Blackout barrel) I noted that it was being installed on an Aero Precision upper, so lets talk a little more about that upper. This upper was purchased for the 300 Blackout complete upper build, so it had to meet a few requirements. This was after all a budget friendly build, but there are a few places that you want to spend the few extra dollars, and this is one of them. After searching around and chatting with the guys at the range and local gun shops, I settled on an A4 standard upper receiver from Aero Precision. I purchased this one online and paid around $55 for it at the time.  After 8 days it showed up in the mailbox.

Initial inspection showed a clean well made piece, with a straight forward type 3 anodizing. I gave it a good cleaning as I do all my new parts and put it back in the nice clean packaging it came in as I knew I didn't have all the parts in yet and wouldn't have time to put it together until that weekend. That week the rest of the parts showed up and got a good cleaning as they came in and then like the upper receiver, back in to the clean package and tucked away into the safe.

Saturday finally rolled around and I could get my parts out and assemble. The barrel nut threads are clean and well formed, the barrel extension hole is clean and has the sharp edges chamfered with the exception of the slot for the alignment pin. It has sharp edges as it should. The bottom of the receiver is well machined with no visible machining chatter or swirls. The ejection port is clean and sized correctly to allow 223/556 brass to clear. It should be noted that big bore brass will not clear a standard Aero Precision upper, so if your looking at the 450 Bushmaster or the 458 Socom it will need to be enlarged. With all the parts laid out I did a quick dry fit to make sure that I would't have any surprises. The barrel extension slid about 90% in with a little pressure, the ejection port door hinge rod was snug but slipped all the way in, and the forward assist fit with all the movement that it should have. The charging handle dropped in and moved freely and the carrier group fit perfect with just a little rattle. Everything came back apart and was lubed up and reassembled. The barrel and barrel nut got a thin coating of Aeroshell 33ms. the barrel required slight pressure, just the way I like them to fit. Up till now I haven't mentioned the barrel nut or hand guard, this was a 15" Keymod(say what you want, I like the Keymod system) the barrel nut threaded on with no issues and torque on to spec. Final install of the upper parts kit showed no surprises and went together smoothly.

This upper is a fantastic deal, being well machined and with a clean finish. It can be found for about $40 dollars on sale and is a steal at that price. For a standard Upper Receiver you can't beat it.
